Summary

According to the latest news published by Martin Pengelly, The Guardians won two online journalism awards for The National Security Agency’s Files reporting. One of this awards is the Gannett Foundation award for investigative journalism and the other the Gannett Foundation watchdog journalism award. The Online News Association awarded The Guardian for its work on the issue of NSA dragnet surveillance.

This association is a nonprofit membership organization for digital journalists, connecting journalism, technology and innovation, and awarded the Guardian at a ceremony in Atlanta on Saturday night.

In June of this year the history began when some documents leaked by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The big revelation of this document was that the NSA had been collecting the telephone metadata of millions of Americans. Since that moment The Guardian has reported extensively on the scale and scope of the NSA's activities, leading to legislative moves in the US Congress to rein in the agency.

Janine Gibson, who is the editor in chief of Guardian US, said: "These awards are significant, not just to our team who have worked relentlessly for months on this story, but because they recognize the importance of difficult watchdog journalism in the public interest."

Other winners on Saturday night included the Boston Globe, which was honoured for its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing and other stories, the Texas Tribune and the New York Times.

How green are you?

I think that in Chile the people don’t care about the environment, but there are organizations that help to reduce the contamination or even some people help on his own recycling and doing others activities. But, how the people learn about environmentally friendly practices? I think that in internet is where we find the most quantity information, at least in Chile. There’s a web page called “YoReciclo.com” and in this page we can know about the places for recycling through the type of garbage or different campaigns to recycle.

Also, the other day I saw a tv program in Canal 13 C about different initiatives like make bricks with plastic bottles and waste, or make crafts with glass. So, I think that are many types of alternatives for recycling and someone easier that we can incorporate into our habits. Like use bike or walk instead of a car, or turn off lights when we don’t use it. Also we can use the shower for less time and try to disconnect all the plugs that we not used.

The distance between my home and the university is long, and for that I used the public transporting, but I would like to use a bike like a transport. I’m not in any eco organization because I don´t have time to dedicate to these. But I would like to join in an eco-organization because there contribute to take care the environment and this is very important in these days.

For reduce my carbon footprint I recycle my water bottle and I used for a few days, for not buy every day a new water bottle. I turn on just one lights in the night in my house, for not spend too much electricity. I think in Santiago all the people use a car and they don´t worry about the contamination that a car produces. And many times I saw people litter in the street and don´t worry about that. They would have more conscience at the moment to think in the environment.

My ideal job

I’m studying journalism and I’m in fourth year of my career, so I think that my ideal job in this area would be journalist of international news. With this job I will be able travel around the world and visit all the countries that  I like, as France, Italy, Mexico or Unites States. That would be really cool because I love to travel.

The principal qualities and skills that I need to do this job would be study and finish journalism. And obviously learn a lot of languages, for example if I‘m  going to France I need to learn the languages very well  and this is not an easy job. For that I think that I would be good in this job, because I love to learn the languages and I study English and French in the university. I think this a little difficult, but I loved these languages and when you like things, it’s easier.

The principal difficulty of having a job like that would be don’t see my family and this would be bad sometimes. And this job demands a lot of time for the preparation and all the trip, and I wouldn’t have time to see my friends neither. And these types of jobs are not easy to find because require a lot of years of preparation and of experience.
